Amazon.com "You can't always get what you want." The Rolling Stones may have said it best, and it seems to be writer Hank Moody's theme song. David Duchovny (X Files) was born to play this sly, sarcastic, self-loathing, and--despite all the meaningless sex, booze, and fist fights--kind character. Writer Moody hates the Los Angeles world he lives in; a world that turned his sharp best-seller into a cheesy date movie, where his young daughter and should-have-been wife (Natascha McElhone) are slipping away into the hands of a rich play-it-safe guy, and where everything he truly wants seems just out of his reach. But the man hasn't lost all hope. "Happy endings may get a bad rap, but they do happen," he assures his daughter. "And when they do, they're just as true as the unhappy ones." One can't help but hope Hank finds his happy ending, because it's with his family that his soft side surfaces. Hank takes no shame in trying to woo back his "wife" Karen, even if it is in front of her new fiance. He knows he's meant to be with her--plain and simple--and there's a glint in her eye that always makes you wonder if she's really thinking the same thing. And his daughter Becca? Well, any guy would melt against this guitar-wielding cutie (played by the adorable Madeleine Martin), but Hank really captures the "I'll kick a lot of ass for my daughter" mentality that so many dads harbor. He's also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment's notice to heed his daughter's call. The rest of the cast, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Pamela Adlon (Lucky Louie), provide some surprisingly interesting and hilarious side stories. Just when it seems situations in this show can't get any more ludicrous or disgusting, they most certainly do. That's the beauty of it. Californication is a dark, coarse, edgy adult comedy. It's also very real, and quite intelligent. --Jordan Thompson

Duchovny X-cels in this X-cellent and seXy show August 18, 2008 **Ok, forgive the title. I am just such a huge X-Files fan, I couldn't help myself.** As a major Mulder fan, I love David Duchovny. I was a little skeptical of "Californication" at first. I thought it might be one of those T and A shows for men --with no substance. But I quickly fell in LOVE with this melancholy yet funny, sexy, sweet show. I even love the artsy and moody (no pun intended) opening shots and music. I always knew Duchovny had range X-ceeding beyond Mulder, which he proved in the movie "Kalifornia" that he made years ago with Brad Pitt. Duchovny has often shown his sense of humor too--even on very dark episodes of X-Files. But in "Californication" Duchovny really makes Hank Moody come to life. You love him even as he self destructs. As a woman, I can understand and identify the desire of all the women around him wanting to make things all better for him, even if for just one night. The poignant relationship between Hank and Karen is achingly heartbreaking at times, especially for those of us who know that feeling all too well--the feeling of yearning for "once upon a time." The show resembles "Sex and the City". I can't help but notice the similarities between Californication and SATC. Some are obvious, like the fact Duchovny was in both shows. And that actor Evan Handler was a regular character in both shows, as well. Also, Hank is a writer, like Carrie. Both titles refer to the act of intercourse. Both Hank and Carrie reflect on relationships and write about them as they go through certain issues. Is "Californication" the male LA version of SATC's female NY version? Who knows, who cares. Both shows are excellent and even in their similarities, they are very original and so well written and witty. Kudos.
Warning: Californication has Sex, Drugs, and Intelligence. August 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"A morning of awkwardness is far better than a night of loneliness."--Hank Moody
The fact that Family First has called for a boycott of this Showtime series for its depiction of sex, drugs, alcohol, and "innuendo" is reason enough to experience it. Created by Tom Kapinos (Dawson's Creek) and produced by Scott Winant (My So-Called Life; thirtysomething), Californication stars David Duchovny (The X-Files) as 30-something novelist, Hank Moody, whose move to LA and writer's slump complicate his relationships with his ex-girlfriend, Karen van der Beek (Natascha McElhone), and their 12-year-old daughter, Rebecca "Becca" Moody (Madeleine Martin). Hank has written three best-selling novels, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, and God Hates Us All (all Slayer album titles), but now suffers from a case of writer's block. Although he is also a sex-addicted, self-destructive cad, who has a thing for hookers, surfer girls, and hot nuns alike, Hank is always a likeable character. "Happy endings may get a bad rap, but they do happen," he lovingly advises his daughter. "And when they do, they're just as true as the unhappy ones." There are several things that make Californication such a great show: its dark comedy, clever dialogue, strong performances, edgy storylines, and great music. The series soundtrack features music by the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Joe Strummer, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Foo Fighters, The Doors, Steve Earle, Death Cab For Cutie, and Warren Zevon. Season One consists of twelve episodes:
1. Pilot 2. Hell-A Woman 3. The Whore of Babylon 4. Fear And Loathing At The Fundraiser 5. LOL 6. Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder 7. Girls, Interrupted 8. California Son 9. Filthy Lucre 10. The Devil's Threesome 11. Turn The Page 12. The Last Waltz

Californication - Season One August 14, 2008 I enjoyed watching this series. I found it very intertaining and I could relate to the storyline. I can't wait to watch Season Two.
dark humor either love it or hate it, but we always want more.... August 14, 2008 For those of us with a liberal outlook on life, who use their brains and who love to be amused by dark, witty, well written stories, then this show is a real jem. For those who hate it and who can only see the sex, drugs, booze and sex, then you will never get it...so you might as well go back to prime time mindless sit-coms and let the rest of us "low lifes" have all the fun! All the cast are really great and were well selected for their roles. The writers deserve raises and awards. The director should be praised for having the courage for not watering down this toxic cocktail And lastly SHOWTIME deserves credit for having the balls to put a show on like this without trying to be "politically correct" or not to offend ANYONE. As you can see from the reviews here, one either loves it or hates it, there is not much middle ground with this show, which is the way it should be, because this show does not take the safe path and look for "middle ground". But something also tells me that the ones who hate it still watch for the T and A while shaking their tiny heads, which, as the rest of us knows, means they have missed the whole point of dark, edgy humor. However, that being said, it is the very fact that these up tight, finger wagging, head up their assumption type of people who hate it so makes me love it even more... You see the path less traveled is not only less crowded but a hell of a lot more fun to travel! ~
We already know about how low-lifers live August 14, 2008 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
So, what we have here is one more tale of how low-lifers spend and waste their time, huh? This show has got to be the most embarrassing productions, in which any of the currently involved parties have ever participated. It is not an original portrayal of how aimless people go through day after day doing absolutely nothing but the typical selfdisturbatory endeavors of any average human with no clear cut goals in life, not even looking for any meaning, never having it cross their minds that maybe, since this isn't working, they ought to aim a little higher at what used to be called good, and noble, and honorable and showing character, or conscience. Oh, but that is exactly what they are trying to portray? Pardon me, then. Keep it up. The funding for this show will stop very soon. Even the vaunted DD cannot keep up for long this tired and worn out rendition of how many of us do nothing. We all know exactly how to waste our lives. We occasionally do some of that stupid stuff ourselves and certainly know what it looks like in others. If you do like this show, you must be very young. If you need to learn about it, look elsewhere. This knowledge can be better gained in every/any other presentation of this, the genre of the degenerate. These folks think that, "No press is bad press." Think again.
