Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renee Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy. If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humor, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married."  Fabulous Flick - Even better than the book July 20, 2008
I just love this movie. An absolutely wonderful, believable storyline. Solid performances by Renee Zellwegger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.
This of course was based on a book, which was a great read. I must say, that this is one of those rare instances where I actually loved the movie even more so than the book as the story just seemed even more believable.
Renee Zellwegger is quite endearing in this movie and I actually think it's one of her best performances. She's charming, funny, and does a great job getting you to fall in love with Bridget. I also think her accent was fabulous.
Loved Hugh Grant in this one as it's a little different than his usual nice guy persona....it really works and he really makes you laugh. Even though he's the womanizer in this film, he still is quite likable as you see that he and Bridget genuninely seem to have fun together. (despite his "wandering" ways.)
Collin Firth is a mostly uptight and serious attorney who has trouble letting hair down (unlike Bridget), but you can really see him falling for Bridget during the movie and all of their encounters. (more so than the book). He's also quite charming and surprisingly sexy as well. You find yourself rooting for him over the likeable Daniel Cleaver character played by Hugh Grant.
Liked this one so much, I had to own it.....Great movie, while somewhat of a "chick" type flick, I can see it appealing to a larger audience as it's got lots of humor, but not too slapstick.

Love Bridget Jones - I have purchased 2 DVDs (just in case one is "damaged" from overuse.
My only disappointment is that I would have liked the full screen version and when I went to order it you no longer had it in stock.
Perhaps you'll restock?

This "take off" on the Jane Austen classic, Pride & Prejudice, is a disappointment, and the portrayal of immoral behavior is an insult to Jane Austen. If movies were kept "clean", our young people would not think that immoral behavior is "normal". The world would be a better place.
