Just what I was looking for... June 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd been considering purchasing the entire Marvel collection separately for awhile. When I saw this box set was being released, I rushed online to find the best price. I will agree with the poster above me...it's not worth the Amazon price (sorry guys...); BUT...after clicking the "New and Used" link, I ended up buying the box set for about $38 TOTAL (tax, s/h). It arrived in 4-5 days, even with standard shipping!
I'm not a big fan of DVD extras, really...just give me the movies themselves, and I'm happy. I have to be honest...I actually really liked the DD Director's Cut. It gave DD more of an actual story feel to it. Elektra was, well, Elektra. Getting the X-Men Trilogy was worth the price, and throwing in the 2 FF movies makes this box set a convenient way to complete your Marvel collection (already had Spider Man trilogy, Ghost Rider/Punisher/Blade on the way).
Great movies but... June 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
... the price tag isn't warranted.
All of the movies that are included are more or less port overs of the previously released movies. Small enhancements are sprinkled here and there, such as the director's cut version of Daredevil (which to me just extends it to an even longer unwatchable movie...).
The enhanced 2.35:1 video transfer does add a noticeable difference. Crisper, less washed out color, better contrast, and a much cleaner picture during heavy CG moments (especially anything with the Silver Surfer). Daredevil still suffers from being extremely dark time to time, though it is better then the previously released version.
Audio is extremely solid across the board, none of the movies suffer in this category. Awesome high fidelity and clear separation of audio channels. The sound effects associated with the Marvel heros (especially the X-Men) just run chills up your spine in hi-fi, definitely puts an emphasis on the low frequencies.
And finally the "extras" of the boxed set. To me these felt like an after thought. The CD ROM comic book is good for a single look through, not something I would pay money for. The DVD of the animated Fantastic Four is just like the CD ROM comic book, good for a single watch. Don't get me wrong, as for animated series go it was pretty good, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
Overall it's a good boxed set for us Marvel lovers, but in reality they are boxing up several mediocre movies with the good ones and charging you for it. If you already own 3 or more of these movies I wouldn't bother getting this unless you are a SERIOUS collector. The included extras and "enhancements" aren't worth it in my opinion.
Pros: The enhanced 2.35:1 video is a noticeable step up. Awesome sound. A good price per DVD, even though Daredevil is one of them... :)
Cons: Direct port overs of most of the films with no added "extras". Directors cut version of Daredevil (can you tell I didn't like the movie? :)) Boxed extras pretty worthless.
