Amazon.com So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

A childhood favorite that stands the test of time July 17, 2008 Too often when you go back and watch a film you adored as a child, you realize it really wasn't all that good, and even worse, you can barely bring yourself to watch it. Not so this one! Critics have loved to bash this film for decades, but I don't understand why. A great score with songs I can still sing, a great cast, a humane hero who becomes more human when he allows himself to love and be loved in return...and Geoffrey Holder! This film (like many of the Disney classics) helped cultivate my love of and appreciation for our furred and feathered cousins. To this day, I cannot watch "When I look into your eyes" sung to Sophie the seal without welling up like a big baby. A true classic your kids need to see (and you do too!)
Doctor Do Little July 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Doctor Dolittle" was, amazingly,a nominee for Best Picture in 1967. Rex Harrison was a talented actor in his own right,spot-on as the professor in "My Fair Lady" opposite a luminous Audrey Hepburn, and equally great as Julius Caesar in the campfest "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor. "Doctor Dolittle" shows the good professor out of place with the animals.
"Doctor Dolittle" is an interminable musical. Harrison is cast as the good doctor who can "talk to the animals" (he really does talk,in his talk-singing style) He's in search of a giant pink snail. Some of the special effects are truly psychedelic. Unfortunately, the soundtrack is forgettable and the musical plods through its paces. Doctor Dolittle does little. Not much happens. You're better off with Lassie, National Velvet, and even Flipper.
Memories July 9, 2008 The old Doctor Doolittle, the one I watched as child. Bought it for my 3 and 4 y/o, but they wouldn't sit through it. I still enjoy it.
Doctor Dolittle is a classic! July 7, 2008 I was so glad that we were able to purchase this early version of the story of Doctor Dolittle. Rex Harrison is marvelous in the role. The story line is quaint. Costuming is wonderful. My 6-year old daughter enjoyed it as much as I remembered loving it!
very good June 1, 2008 I loved this movie for a long time and when I saw it on sale I just had to get it.
