Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
While the first season of The X-Files introduced us to Scully and Mulder, the second season finds the show confidently hitting its stride. Building on its earlier success, the show evolves, and in these 25 episodes, a glimpse is shown of a longer-running story line (which will continue through subsequent seasons) that is woven into the usual stand-alone episodes of the paranormal. These so-called mythology episodes hint at a global conspiracy involving sinister government agents, UFOs, alien abductions, genetic engineering, the ever-lurking Cigarette Smoking Man, and Fox Mulder's father. Season 2 fleshes out Mulder's family history, including the childhood abduction of his sister Samantha, an event that would shape him for life. Actress Gillian Anderson (Scully) became unexpectedly pregnant during season 2, but series creator Chris Carter managed to dance nimbly around her absence and even integrate it into the show. As in season 1, Mulder and Scully are surrounded by a strong supporting cast, which adds a suspicious new agent named Alex Krycek, an informant named X, and a seemingly indestructible alien bounty hunter.

Among the standout episodes are "The Host," "Duane Barry/Ascension," "Humbug," "Dod Kalm," "Colony/End Game," and "Anasazi." These episodes are a powerful reminder that The X-Files, like no other show on television, can span horror, suspense, mystery, romance, drama, and comedy, sometimes all in the same episode, and always with the production values of a major feature film. --Eugene Wei

Description

5 out of 5 stars ARE YOU GUYS STUPID????????   July 28, 2008

I've been hearing a lot of people bitching and moaning, going "OMG TEH SLIM SET DOESN'T HAVE ANASAZI!!!!11!!1!". Well guess what? MY SLIM SET HAS IT!!!!!! Just because it's missing a disc, doesn't mean it's missing Anasazi. I even checked Disc 6 to see if you guys were correct and what's the last episode listed on the menu??? ANASAZI!!!!!! For crying out loud, if you guys even had this slim set, you wouldn't be bitching about it! So shut up unless you guys know what you're talking about! But anyways, this is a great season, one of the better seasons, and definitely one that picks up the pace.

1 out of 5 stars Missing a disc   June 18, 2008
Although Amazon is well-aware that the Second-Season Slim Set is missing a dvd (disc 7 with the season finale "Anasazi"), it continues to be sold. Scroll down and you will see the complaints of the other frustrated customers who have paid full-price for a not-full set. If you complain to Amazon, they will quickly send you a replacement - of the exact same set which is missing a disc.

Don't buy season 2 from Amazon.

Other than that the X-Files is awesome and season 2 is one of the best seasons.

1 out of 5 stars Can't believe they're missing the season 2 finale   May 28, 2008

I can't believe that this set of discs is missing the last episode of season 2 which continues into the first 2 episodes of season 3. Now I have to save my video tape of the episode. How could they not have corrected this?

5 out of 5 stars The Mythology Begins   May 27, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

In the preceding (first) season of the X-Files, the show was meant to be a scary show. Based off of the old "Kolchak: Night Stalker" television show, the X-Files explored paranormal F.B.I. cases dealing with all sorts of spooky phenomena. The core of the show, however, was Agent Fox Mulder's pursuit of UFO's (as he believed aliens abducted his sister when he was young) and his pairing with the skeptical Agent Dana Scully. Yet, during that first season, there was little to no continuity within the "mythology" episodes. Deep Throat (Mulder's secret informant) was the only recurring character, while the UFO/alien plots did carry over beyond a single episode. The Second Season changed all that, providing quality drama in three distinct fashions:

1. First, the coherent "mythology" (over-arching plotlines) of the show was inadvertently created when lead actress Gillian Anderson (Scully) needed some time off to have a baby. So, show creator Chris Carter had Scully be abducted by aliens (or was it the government?!) and the mythology was off and running. Over the course of this season, Mulder learns more about the mysterious Cigarette-Smoking Man, comes face-to-face with his long-lost sister, and discovers a government cover-up the likes of which has never been unearthed.

2. While developing that mythology, the X-Files also continued to crank out solid "procedural" episodes. "The Host" (a toilet-dwelling monster) and "Irresistible" (featuring a serial fetishist) are two of the creepiest hours of the show ever produced.

3. Finally, with the episode "Humbug" (the investigation of a bizarre circus side-show), this season began the tradition of what are now know as "comedic" episodes. In a show where the subject matter is often quite serious and often disturbing, these comedic episodes (filled with sly humor) were a breath of fresh air.

To conclude, the Second Season of the X-Files is better than the first, as it continues to provide intense drama, while also creating a mythology for the show and introducing humorous episodes.

2 out of 5 stars missing episode   May 25, 2008
I was very happy with this product, but I also realized that episode 25 was missing. I didn't realize this until I got to the end of disk 6.
