Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.

Product Description
The building blocks of winning golf -- from one of the masters of the game.

Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 -- if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step-by-step and stroke by stroke.

In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations -- as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless lessons   August 15, 2008
I picked this up to give my golf game a little boost and it didn't disappoint. Hogan simplifies many of the most essential elements of golf, including grip, stance, ball position, backswing, downswing, etc. All this info comes in a tight package and makes an excellent reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars a must for every golfer   August 12, 2008
this book is an absolute must have for anyone that is inspired to play the great game of golf. practicing and applying these fundamentals will improve your game - no question about it. superbly written and illustrated... it is the definitive golf "how to" instructional guide. i don't care how long you've been playing or at what caliber. if you've got a case of the shanks or are stuck on some bad habits, have a brush up with the book, and you'll be swimming.

4 out of 5 stars Good Learning Tool But Dangerous In The Wrong Hands   August 6, 2008
Ben Hogan's Five Lessons should be a must in every golfer's library. However, I believe this book can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Hogan appears to have been ahead of his time on some issues discussed in Five Lessons so there is a lot of good information to take away from this book. However, not everything he discusses is appropriate for every player. It takes a discerning eye to figure out what would be beneficial to an individual player and what would be detrimental.

The book is an easily read book with very good illustrations and there are five different main lessons which I have listed below...

* The Grip
* The Stance & Posture
* The First Part of the Swing
* The Second Part of the Swing
* Summary & Review

While I highly recommend this book and its lessons I can't overemphasize the benefit of a) getting fitted for your clubs by a qualified person and b) actual one on one instruction from a professional.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   July 29, 2008
Amazing how much this 50 yr old book changed my swing for the better. This book was easy to read and apply on the range.

5 out of 5 stars Five Lessons: Modern Fundamentals of Golf   July 22, 2008
This book is a classic golf instruction text -- without a doubt the best such book. I read this book at least once per year just to fine tune my golf swing -- or anytime the golf demons try to attack my swing. I have owned this book for many years, and in a recent move my old copy got lost, hence, the need to buy a new one. If you are a really serious golfer, this book should be a permanant part of your golf instruction library; if you're a beginner, it is a must for developing a sound golf swing. Tiger may be the best to ever play the game, but Hogan had the swing that amateurs should try to emulate.
