Product Description
Nick of Time is the first young reader's book written by bestselling author Ted Bell. In the grand tradition of epic novels like Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island comes a wondrous tale of time travel, adventure, and riches, in which twelve-year-old Nick McIver sets out to become “the hero of his own life.”
The setting is England, 1939, on the eve of war. Nick and his younger sister, Kate, live in a lighthouse on the smallest of the Channel Islands. Nick and Kate come to the aid of their father who is engaged in a desperate war of espionage with German U-boat wolf packs that are circling the islands. The information they provide to Winston Churchill is vital as he tries to warn England of the imminent Nazi invasion.
One day Nick discovers an old sea chest, left for him by his ancestor, Captain Nicholas McIver of the Royal Navy. Inside, he finds a time machine and a desperate plea for help from the captain. He uses the machine to return to the year 1805. Captain McIver and, indeed, Admiral Nelson’s entire fleet are threatened by the treachery of the French and the mutinous Captain Billy Blood. Nick must reach deep inside, using his wits, courage, and daring to rescue the imperiled British sailors.
His sister, Kate, meanwhile, has enlisted the aid of two of England’s most brilliant “scientific detectives,” Lord Hawke and Commander Hobbes, to thwart the invading Nazis. She and Nick must face England’s underwater enemies, a challenge made all the more difficult when they discover the existence of Germany’s supersecret submarine.
In this striking adventure for readers of all ages, Nick must fight ruthless enemies across two different centuries, on land and sea, to help defeat those determined to destroy his home and his family.

Great Book for all ages August 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was stuck in bed for 2 days following surgery and had enjoyed reading the rest of Ted Bell's books, so I though I would give Nick of Time a try even though I am well into my 20's. I was supposed to get a lot of sleep, but unfortunately I could not put Nick of Time down!!! It is so refreshing to read a book that supports strong morals and reminds readers of how important heros are. I think this book is just the best!!!
Delightful adventure! August 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this audio book. But we loved it! My children [and my husband and I] were enthralled with the story. It made the time go by quickly on our journey. We are very particular about what we listen to, and we gave this one a hearty thumbs-up. Captivating, kept our attention, and our 5-year-old wants to be a "hero" now!

Excellent Book for young boys (bought this for my nephew) but also for adults who enjoyed books like Treasure Island or Count of Monte Cristo. Very enjoyable to read.
Outstanding read for all ages!!! July 24, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This story was filled with adventure and character traits often missing in today's society. It will thrill you and take you back to the childhood fantasy of your youth. Loved it!!!

Here's an adventure tale that will keep you turning the pages long after your bedtime, maneuvering with young Nicholas McIver through treacherous waters off the coast of England in 1939 and 1805. Even when our hero and his endearing little sister are enveloped in a pea soup fog, the narrative is crisp and clear. While other maritime adventures get tangled in creaking verbosity, here the taut lines sing. The clarity of the prose makes this complex plot accessible even to reluctant readers. Chapters leave you dangling from the yardarms straining for a glimpse of what comes next. The squeamish might cringe at some details in the battle scenes, but those few gruesome images quickly give way to the triumph of good over evil. Add this finely crafted adventure yarn to your list of books for pre-teens and middle schoolers. It's good, clean fun for grown-ups too. Janet Gingold author of Finch Goes Wild
