Product Description
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

My Dog Helped me Find this Book! July 24, 2008 Okay, this may sound strange to those who have never had a close bond with a dog, but my dog, Bowie, who died in December 2007, led me to this book. I was searching for some kind of 'sign' from him to let me know he was 'okay' and that it really had been time to let him go (he was old and suffering from severe arthritis and hip dysplasia so he was put to sleep). I received a review about this book written by a book club I am part of. I was hesitant to read because I wasn't sure if I could 'handle' reading about a dog while grieving for one. First chapter is Enzo the dog trying to figure out how to let his owner know he's old, arthritic, and ready to die. Wow, what a healing I received from this book. The story goes through Enzo's life and that it was a happy one, but also of Enzo looking forward to death as the chance to 'race in the rain'. I firmly believe Bowie gave me the sign I was looking for but it doesn't mean I don't still miss him.
Not A Dog Lover? You Will Be! July 23, 2008 Most people are saying, if you're a dog lover, you will love this book. Do NOT miss out reading or recommending this story by limiting it to only dog lovers or racing fans. I have no dogs and know little of racing. This book transcends both! It will also make you a fan of both. Garth Stein has written a wonderful book about a great character, a dog named Enzo, whom I came to love and hang on his every thought. Enzo has a better grasp of life than most people do, even if ironically, he wants to be a human. There are life lessons here that will stay with you and put a smile on your face and in your heart as you learn about living for today and how we choose to live today. You will be wondering about a couple of things, what am I manifesting in my life to bring joy into it and, what the heck is my dog or cat thinking anyway?? This is a wonderfully inspiring and entertaining book. Two barks for Enzo! And FIVE stars for Garth Stein for a most delightful reading EXPERIENCE .
Emotionally powerful & insightful "must read" book July 23, 2008 Wow; what an emotionally powerful and insightful book that will stay with you for a very long time (in the spirit of For One More Day by Mitch Albom.) The book leads you gently into the story and begins to tug at your emotions. You will laugh and you will tear up and feel many emotions in between, but never in a sappy sort of way. Although the story is so much more than about racing, the main character is a race car driver. Did not know anything about racing and had no idea such philosophical gems could be pulled out of it's nature. Told by a sweet loyal observant and philosophical dog, you will not be able to put down the book until you cry and then laugh at the end. Would not want to spoil the end, but it turns out the only way that it could or just the way things should. A must read - not only will you view dogs in a different light and profound respect, but you will be very glad that you were touched by this wonderfully told classic of a book. What a talented author Garth Stein is to reach deeply into the reader's soul.
It is a fabulous story, and great literature. July 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here is what I shared with the author:
> I am certain you have heard tons of stories from dog owners who loved > "The Art of Racing..."; here is mine. > > We are on Golden Retriever #3, Barkley. First was George - made it > 13 years - then Sam - another 13-year verteran - now the B-Boy, who > will be 2 tomorrow. > > Received your book for Father's Day, inhaled it over a two-day period. > Could not put it down; did not want it to end. > > I guess all three of our Golden boys could have been named Enzo > after reading your novel! I call Barkley "Enzo" half the time now. > > I want to say "thank you" to you. I am not the most well read person > on the planet, but I have read most of the classics, devote a certain > part of the day every day to reading and keep my reading list diverse. > > This is one of the finest pieces of literature ever written, and I am > not kidding. You have taken the timeless issues of love, courage, faith and right/wrong, woven then in an incredible story line, told it through the eyes of a loyal, loving dog (which, as we all know is God spelled backwards) and made it work with precision. Then you fold in devotion, focus, even the concept of reincarnation with mastery. > > In a former life, I owned an advertising agency with my wife. I would > tell the copywriters if they could take a work OUT of an ad without > hurting it, they had helped it. I swear to you, I cannot think of one > single word that could be taken out of your entire novel WITHOUT > hurting it. > > You have incredible talent and I thank you for sharing it with me. > And all the Enzos in the world. > > Michael Coates
Great Reading - Enzo and Denny July 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would highly recommend this book for dog lovers and racing fans. Very well written; the author plays out the story line to keep you reading and not want to put down the book.
Enzo has a keen eye and is amazingly perceptive in his view of a young man and the tragic events that impact his life and family.
While I thought I would cry at the end; the book made you understand the transition process and quality of life.
Excellent read - would recommend this book highly!!!
