Spectacular Golf delivers its titular promise. While the prose is serviceable enough, reliving memorable moments on courses around the world (like Arnold Palmer's legendary come-from-behind win in the 1960 U.S. Open at Denver's Cherry Hills), it's the color photography of this outsized volume that is--in a word--spectacular. Several pages actually unfold to near Par 5 length for the coffee table (almost 4 feet from end to end). And the images are surprisingly democratic, with recent upstart courses appearing opposite the royal and ancient originals. Naturally, the legends are well represented here: Georgia's Augusta, Medinah outside Chicago, Long Island's Shinnecock Hills, California's Riviera, and the ur course, St. Andrews, in Scotland. But so are the talked-about new courses--like Sand Hills, carved out of the Nebraska plains by Ben Crenshaw and captured in a stunning palette of tans and greens. No matter what the heritage or landscape, all the courses in Spectacular Golf dazzle in images textured enough to capture their nuances and uniqueness, whether it's an aerial shot of Cypress Hills' impossible-looking 16th hole jutting into the Pacific or a fairway guided by centuries-old rock walls in the Scottish Highlands. What's more, every page makes you want to run right out and whack a few. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description
Nothing makes golfers yearn to play more than to see a fantastic course laid out before them -- the beauty of the fairways, the dramatic backgrounds, the subtle breaks of the greens. For avid golfers who can't make it to the world's most beloved courses, this handsome guide is the next best thing. Filled with images by the photographers at Golf Digest, Spectacular Golf covers a wide range of courses throughout the world. Legendary courses come to life in 36 gatefolds that open to almost four feet. The text highlights the lore of these courses and the feats of golf's greatest players.

This book has it all. It's like traveling around the world and stopping to play at the greatest courses-and only on beautiful, sunny days! What's more is that your tour guide (the author) knows every interesting and entertaining anecdote about each place and everyone who has played there. If you like this book, take a look at Golf Digest's 50th anniversary book, "Golf Digest: Golf's Greatest Players, Courses and Voices." More great photos and the best golf writing ever!

5 out of 5 stars A lifers review   June 2, 2000

This is not so much my review as it is my 92 year old grandfather's. He's been golfing for over 50 years and still says it's the greatest game ever played. This book reminded him of places he had been and events he had witnessed. I could tell by his reaction that this is as fine a tribute to the game of golf as you will find anywhere. There could be no tougher critic. Highly recommended.
