Product Description
Memphis — the birthplace of the Blues and world-famous barbeque — has a soul like no other city in America’s Mid-South. It’s home to FedEx, the first Holiday Inn, and Graceland. Experience it all for yourself in the new title from the best-selling Then and Now series: Memphis Then and Now.
• Amazing then-and-now photographs of Memphis’ most popular sites take readers on an intimate tour of the city, from the mighty Mississippi River to Beale Street and beyond. • Make a pilgrimage to Memphis’ most famous residence — Elvis Presley’s Graceland — and see what it was like before it became the palatial home of America’s "King." • While many of Memphis’ old buildings were lost to bulldozers during the Depression, many were saved by the National Register of Historic Places. • Three blocks of Beale Street have been designated as historic landmarks. Fascinating photographs capture monuments like the First Baptist Beale Street Church, Greener’s Dept. Store, and the Palace and New Daisy Theater. • Pay homage to the birthplace of the blues, soul and rock and roll at legendary locales like Stax Records and the Sun Record Company where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis launched their careers.

Excellent in Every Regard October 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Russell Johnson is an expert in the history and culture of Memphis, TN. When I heard that he was working on this project, I immediately pre-ordered a copy for myself. As a Memphis native, I was excited to dig through the material. When I received my copy, I was well pleased with the results.
Beautiful historical photographs of Memphis, TN are side by side with current photographs of the same subjects, providing a striking visual commentary on the growth and progress of this fine southern city. The accompanying paragraphs are filled with unique insight and fun historical facts. Mr. Johnson couldn't have done a better job putting this project together. Memphis Then & Now has become an instant favorite in my household, a classic work that I will enjoy for many years to come.
Best in Class! October 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are two books by this title. This particular one is part of a much larger then and now series. While I've seen some very nice photos of Memphis in other books, this book lays out high resolution photos from the past beside professional color photos of that same site today.
The photographic comparisons are the best on the market. I know this well as a Memphis Historian and the owner of MemphisHistory.com.
