The Seagull Incident At The 1998 Players Championship

Here’s the infamous incident where a seagull stole Steve Lowry’s ball at the 17th at Sawgrass at the 1998 Players Championship.

Under the rules, the ball was deemed to have been moved by an outside agency.

  1. The rules of the game of golf are based on the guiding principle, which is engraved on the inside of the cover of the official publication of the laws of the R&A Rules Limited organization (a company created on the “base” of the Ancient Royal Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland): “Play the ball, how he laid down, play on the field, as it is, if neither one nor the other is possible, act in fairness. You need to know the New Golf Rules 2020.”

Because the full text of the New Golf Rules 2020 is not only a complex but also a very voluminous document, R & A since 2004 has been publishing a convenient reminder brochure Rules in Brief: “Quick Guide to Rules of Golf 2020.” And more recently, this document is included in the first collection of Rules entitled “A Quick Guide to the New Golf Rules 2020.”
